Okay, to save time, my name is James T. Kirk. I'm the Captain of the USS Enterprise. I've decided to come here as a Warden... to come back as a Warden?

[He has to ponder this for a moment.]

Honestly, I know I was here before but I must've been wasted the entire time because I don't remember any of it. So fill me in. What happened, what I'd do.

You said you... sort of remember being here. Do you have any idea how long it's been since you returned to the Enterprise? How much time has passed?

[Kirk's eyes drop down towards her legs, almost on reflex, before he follows her down the hall. The answer to her question though? He really doesn't have one, so he shrugs.]

No idea. I've been the captain for less than a year. If that helps?

[ That doesn't quite gel with her recollection, but it's been a long time - she couldn't say whether it's just get memory playing tricks, or something else. It's not as if their illustrious employer (no. His employer, her jailer) has much respect for linear time. ]

I suppose it doesn't really matter. You're here now.

[ She opens the door onto the deck and steps out; the air is cooler up here and she breathes deeply. ]

[During his initial walk through of the Barge, which basically ended at the mess hall because he was hungry, Kirk didn't make his way to the deck. And now that he's here? Holy shit.]

Wow. We don't have stuff like this where I'm from.

[ She smiles, faintly, cautiously. ]

I suppose it makes a change for you to be so... exposed, like this. It's not space exactly, more like the space between spaces. Whatever there is between alternate universes.

[Kirk looks at her strangely when she starts talking about alternate universes.]

Yeah, usually don't get this close without a suit.

What makes you say that it's between universes?

[ She's wrong-footed for a moment, but only a moment. He doesn't remember anything, she reminds herself; at least not enough. ]

Most people on board are from different planes of reality. It stands to reason that the Barge is its own place, or... no place at all, you might say. A void.

Well, it is supposed to be a prison ship for people who have died. [So yeah, that makes sense.]

What did I really sign up for?

[ A prison ship for people who have died. Unless you take it on yourself to be so very special that the Admiral decides to keep you around even after you've earnt your life back. ]

Honestly?

[ She sets her forearms on the railing, peering up into the dark. ]

...the Barge can be awful. It needs the best of you, 24-7, but it draws out the worst and throws it in your face and everybody else's for good measure, over and over and over. Things happen that make you lose all control over yourself, do things you'd never do if you were on your right mind. And it's nobody's fault, usually, there's nobody to take responsibility. All you can do is shrug and make your apologies and try to move on.

[That's a sobering description. Part of him thinks that she has to be exaggerating and another part assumes that it won't be that bad for him because he's pretty tough ~~and also very arrogant~~.]

But there's gotta be some kind of stress relief. Or I imagine there'd be mass murder happening all the time.

[ She doesn't answer verbally, but she does pull a face that says 'yeah, pretty much'. ]
