Greetings citizens!

My traveling companions and I are new to your fair city, and we are in need of a place to stay. We have coin to pay, I promise.

We need two rooms, and then perhaps a pile of rags for one of my friends. He's a chipmunk. But! I assure you that he is very well behaved. You will probably never know he's there.

[James... doesn't know anybody named Arthur, perhaps a little strange after all of the aimless wandering and shenanigans that he gets himself into, but that's a story for another day. Today's story focuses on how when he hears Merlin start to shout... he begins to look around too, like he can magically find this Arthur person, just by looking and by way of it, help this person find his friend too!

Too bad he can't do that, or there's just no one Athur-esque near him.]

[From the way 'Arthur' doesn't automatically turn at the sound of his name like some kind of attention-seeking prat missile, Merlin is forced to (reluctantly) conclude that this is one of those identical-twin things.

Or Arthur with amnesia.

That isn't completely unfeasible. Normal day in Camelot, almost.]

Excuse me! [Yeah he's very clearly talking to James now.] Sorry to bother - what's your name, please?

"It's James." [The previous thought train was a lie. He had a chipmunk named Arthur but as he was a chipmunk, nobody really was ever looking for him and most people actually found him sort of weird. So James just assumed that this man was looking for someone else. And he's also kind of an idiot.] "Do you need help finding someone?"

"No, I - I'm alright, thanks. I thought you were someone else." He's not completely detached from the idea that this could be Arthur. Maybe he arrived on the Barge and then immediately fell overboard when they made port. That would be just his luck. "Have you been in town long?"

Sorry to crush your dreams, Merlin. "I just arrived this morning, as a matter of fact."

Fuck you, they're not crushed yet. That'll be after port. Sob.

"Oh, me too! Sorry - I'm Merlin. Nice to meet you, James." He offers a hand to shake.

He'll still have a blonde douche to console him if he really needs it. Not all is lost.

James shakes his hand, with a cheerful smile. "The same to you, sir. Where are you from, if you don't mind me asking?"

Hoorah.

"Um - Camelot," he offers, not seeing the point in lying when he doesn't know the local geography anyway. "It's a long way from here, you...might not have heard of it."

"I've been a lot of places, but you're right. I can't say that I have heard of it."

"Not a lot of people have, I bet. It's...really far. And...small. Very small." He cleared his throat. "Why've you come to Ravin?"

Have a confused frown for that. "Just passing through, I think. Perhaps attending a wedding tomorrow."

'Confused frown' is a look he's so familiar with getting from Arthur that it's sort of comforting. He smiles. "A wedding! That's great." Then he pulls a face. "Is it 'perhaps' on whether it's happening, or whether you're going to go?"

"Well, I have to go actually. I'm wary of the groom's family. There's... a lot of them." What if they find out who he is?

Merlin is not un-pulling this face. "And you're...worried you might make a fool of yourself?"

"... yes. That's it exactly." Or at least the lie sounds excellent now.

He sounds exactly the same as Arthur does when he's saying something that's patently untrue, too. It's uncanny. But Merlin doesn't push it.

"Try picturing everyone in their underclothes if you're nervous. I've heard that helps."

"... why on earth would I do that?" That's horrifying gross, you bad man.

"I...I don't know. It's just something I've heard. Probably from people who are...bad, and...wrong? Don't do that. I take it back."

James is staring at him for a few moments. He can't seem to decide whether this man is just silly or a minion of his uncle's. "Right... well, Merlin. You should perhaps find better people to talk to."

Way to break his heart, not!Arthur. But he's not going to argue the toss; he just steps back, hands in his pockets. "All right. I'm sorry to have bothered you, James."

And now he's going to stalk you from a distance to make sure you don't get hurt, because that is how Merlin rolls.

"I'm sorry!" James rolls his eyes at himself. He always says stupid things. He didn't mean leave him alone, honest. "Merlin. I just meant that maybe you shouldn't be talking to be people who suggest you think about other people... like that. You just need better friends, that's all."
