Well, I'll just say it.

I'm bored. We're all doomed because that phrase is cursed. Whatever. Moving on.

[Half an hour later, Uhura showed up to his door, knocking twice.]

Captain...

[Kirk went to answer the door, putting a foot in front of Aristotle, who becomes less and less anything like a guard dog every day and more just a lover of all people ever. And he liked to jump on them.]

"Aristotle, come on. You know her." [He gave the dog a light kick.] "And aren't we to the point where you call me Jim?"

It's habit. [She stepped inside and reached a hand down to the dog.]

Besides, it's only Jim on days I like you.

"Get her, Aristotle." [Kirk murmured, clearly being sarcastic.] "Go for the ankles."

[Which the dog didn't do. He just barked happily and ran off.]

"Well, take a seat then, Lieutenant."

Yeah. Vicious dog. [She rolled her eyes and sat down, leaning back to make herself comfortable.]

Lieutenant?

"I thought we were going by rank today."

Just you. [She smirked and crossed her legs.]

Are we playing or not?

[Kirk grabbed his chess set out of it's storage spot in his desk and started setting it up.]

"Do you want to be white or black?"

White. [She shrugged.] Does it really matter, though?

"No because I'll probably kick your ass without even trying."

[She pointed a finger at him.]

Hey. Hey, what did I say about that?

"That's not taunting, it's the truth. If I was going to taunt you, I'd start hitting on you cause I know it bugs you."

At this point, I don't even care. [She glanced down to the pieces and sighed.]

[Jim held his tongue for about twenty seconds and then he had to say something.] "I know you said you didn't want to talk about it last week but are you alright? Really?"

I'm fine, Jim. I'm fine now. [She gave him a reassuring smile.] I promise that it's nothing...bad.

[Yeah, that was not reassuring. He eyed her for a moment, looking for all the world like he knew something was being kept from him.]

"You have to make the first move."

[She brushed her hair back from her face and picked up the knight, moving it quickly.]

It doesn't even matter. It's over now.

"Being over isn't a qualifier for mattering less." [Jim replied smartly, as he moved one of his pawns.]

Yeah? Well, that's just what it is, Jim. It's over. [The segue didn't make sense to her, but, while she wanted to tell him, she was still very hurt by it.]

"Fine. I'm happy for you then." [He wasn't. He was acting like a brat because he hated being left out of things.]
