Well, I'll just say it.

I'm bored. We're all doomed because that phrase is cursed. Whatever. Moving on.

Anyone want to play a game of chess or cards? Pool? Fucking shuffleboard? Spoons? Anything?

Make three resolutions that will help you on the road towards graduating. I'm going to pick one and that's the one you'll have to uphold this year.

[Kirk grabbed his chess set out of it's storage spot in his desk and started setting it up.]

"Do you want to be white or black?"

White. [She shrugged.] Does it really matter, though?

"No because I'll probably kick your ass without even trying."

[She pointed a finger at him.]

Hey. Hey, what did I say about that?

"That's not taunting, it's the truth. If I was going to taunt you, I'd start hitting on you cause I know it bugs you."

At this point, I don't even care. [She glanced down to the pieces and sighed.]

[Jim held his tongue for about twenty seconds and then he had to say something.] "I know you said you didn't want to talk about it last week but are you alright? Really?"

I'm fine, Jim. I'm fine now. [She gave him a reassuring smile.] I promise that it's nothing...bad.

[Yeah, that was not reassuring. He eyed her for a moment, looking for all the world like he knew something was being kept from him.]

"You have to make the first move."

[She brushed her hair back from her face and picked up the knight, moving it quickly.]

It doesn't even matter. It's over now.

"Being over isn't a qualifier for mattering less." [Jim replied smartly, as he moved one of his pawns.]

Yeah? Well, that's just what it is, Jim. It's over. [The segue didn't make sense to her, but, while she wanted to tell him, she was still very hurt by it.]

"Fine. I'm happy for you then." [He wasn't. He was acting like a brat because he hated being left out of things.]

[She gave him a bit of a glare and folded her arms across her chest.] Harper and I decided to not...be together anymore, Jim.

Does that make you feel better?

[The news itself didn't cheer him up but it satisfied him to hear it.]

"I'm sorry." [Pause.] "Do I need to shoot him?"

[She rolled her eyes.] I said we decided. It was just better anyway.

It's your move.

"It's still within my rights as Captain to shoot people who hurt my crew for any reason." [Jim moved his rook, for seemingly no other reason besides the fact that he could.] "And most days we're friends, so that's even more reason."

Most days? [She laughed bitterly and picked up a pawn.]

And I'm not hurt.

"And it's suddenly okay for me to hit on you?" [He inched out his bishop.] "That's not normal."

I'm just tired of fighting it right now. [She just stared at the board.]

"Man, this is depressing." [Jim stared at her for a moment.] "You want a drink?"

[She considered saying no, but then just gave up on that.]

Yes. [Pause.] But just one.

"Scout's honor." [Kirk gave her a small salute and got up to grab some of the stuff he'd gotten for Christmas and a couple of glasses.]

[She waited, forgetting about the game for a while.]

Good. And no more when I leave, Jim.

[Jim frowned at her for that.] "I don't drink that much anymore. But thanks for that, mom."
