I'm not sure really, how many friends he might have had here but if you knew him, Derek Hale has left.

[Kirk thinks this has to be a record of how fast a person has been assigned an Inmate and then lost them but anyway.]

Who would I have to suck up to to get a look inside the engine room here? Totally innocent, I promise, I won't touch a thing. It's all for research.

[What's going to happen when he hits on her again?

Kirk's already there, not just because he doesn't have anything better to do but actually because he's fascinated by the view from the deck, which she showed him. There's really nothing like this back home, the view from the observation deck on Enterprise comes close but it's not the same.]

Hey you.

Hi.

[She gives him a small, slightly tense smile and steps away from the door to let him get at it.]

After you.

[Jim waves his communicator at the door almost absentmindedly.]

Do you... know Derek really well?

Not really well. He wasn't even here for two months before he disappeared, and both of us were in comas for some of that time. If he'd been here longer...

[She shakes her head.]

It doesn't matter. I just hope he's alright.

Me too.

[He gestures for her to head in before him.]

So what have you been up to, besides possibly a coma?

[She goes.]

Oh, not much. Just - work, meetings with Jesse. Trying to keep busy. You?

Is it weird that I'm bored? [There are lulls on the Enterprise too but it's not the same. On the Enterprise, there's a thousand things he could find to do and here it just feels like... waiting around.]

I actually have started writing on my thesis again.

It's not weird. Activity here comes in fits and starts, always has. What's your thesis subject?

[Bar's empty right now, so she circles around to play bartender and gives him a questioning look.]

Whatever you want. [He says in response to that look, assuming she's asking what he wants and he's so not picky about his alcohol.]

I suggested that to be a successful captain, you need to know as much about how the ship works as you do about the crew. You're responsible for both, neither is going to work if the other isn't in prime condition.

[She dithers briefly and then makes two vodka and cokes.]

That makes sense. Are you hoping to change Star Fleet's policy?

At least what they teach in the Academy. They require one semester on engineering if you aren't in that tract, and that's it.

[Tosh smiles faintly.]

...Some people might say you should be more comfortable delegating. Here. [She holds out a glass to him.]

[Kirk takes his drink with a grateful smile.]

I'm not planning on spending my whole day down there. But if something goes wrong, I should know at least what it is, if not how to fix it.

[She smiles faintly.]

That's admirable, honestly. I always tried to know a little bit about what all my colleagues did. Not - that I was running the show, I just felt safer that way.

[And that also meant she could go to London and do an alien autopsy when a particular colleague was too hungover to move.]

[He smiles back.]

If you ever find yourself in need of a job after this, I've got room on Enterprise.

[She looks outright startled, but it's gone a split second later and she takes a sip of her drink.]

That's kind of you, but I think 'this' is going to take a while.

[And she assumes that if you knew her you wouldn't want her. :c]

[ She looks a little pained for a moment. ]

Well, that's...very generous. [She smiles, tight and self-effacing.] Though I can't help but hope you hold the rest of your employees to higher standards.

Did I ever tell you how I enlisted?

[He laughs a little, and sets his drink down.]

I believe Pike called me a 'genius level repeat offender' in his speech. Somebody has to give all of us a chance first.

Maybe two or three, depending on who you are.

[She sips her drink.]
