I've gotten quite good at some card games.

Which card games?

I don't know, a few. Rummy, cheat, poker, that one where you have to make tricks worth twenty-one? A few.

And Kirk was there maybe ten minutes later, knocking on the door lightly. You'd better actually have those cards, Merlin because Jim actually didn't.

He did. He also had a bottle of something that had been transplanted from Gaius' supplies when his cabin had expanded to include the workshop; he was reasonably sure it was intended for drinking although it was also possible that it was a cleaning fluid or some sort of anaesthetic. A recent conversation with Arthur had weakened his resolve on the 'not drinking' front.

He just gestured at the door to open it, not getting up from where he was studiously shuffling cards.

"'Evening."

Kirk will drink the cleaning fluid with you, because he's a bro.

He closed the door behind him and went to sit across from Merlin at the bench, watching for half a second.

"So. What'd you decide on?"

"Poker? I don't have much to play for besides...pride. Might have some copper coins somewhere."

"I'm not going to take your money, Merlin. We can play for favors, like laundry or even play for shots."

He glanced at the bottle. "So you have to drink if you win?" Wait, that didn't make sense. "If you lose."

"That's kind of the idea. Or we could do strip poker." Yeah he sees that flag over there, friend.

It's just a rainbow, alright. Nothing wrong with rainbows.

"I'm just going to pretend you didn't say that." He poured a quantity of Gaius' mystery alcohol into a cup, placed it in the middle of the table and then dealt them both two cards.

Kirk just smiled in response to that, picking up his cards. "How's the flood treating you?"

Whatever levity there was on his face just sort of went away.

"Arthur doesn't remember we were ever friends. He knows I exist. That's about it." He glanced at his cards. "I raise."

For a moment he wasn't sure how that was meant to work in the context of the game they were playing, then decided to wing it and poured half a shot more into the cup.

That worked for Kirk, honestly. He was maybe planning on throwing a few hands anyway because he knew that Merlin's alcohol tolerance was shit.

"Call," Kirk said, pouring a bit more. "At least it's just a flood right?" Maybe just repeating what Shego said and not really feeling it. It sucked when your best friend didn't know you, alright.

Merlin was maybe planning on cheating so that made them even.

"I know." He didn't sound convinced. He dealt three cards face-up on the table - queen of hearts, three of hearts, seven of spades - and glanced up to Kirk.

"Call," Jim said, even though he had pretty much nothing in his hand anyway. "McCoy doesn't know me either, so we're kind of in the same boat I guess."

"I'm sorry." He reviewed his hand briefly and shrugged by way of his call before dealing the turn card.

That helped a little, in that he had a pair of fours right now. Which was still super crappy.

"The Admiral's a dick."

Merlin frowned. "He can be. I raise." His hand was terrible, but that could change whenever he wanted and it felt like getting Kirk drunk was something of a public service.

"I'm pretty sure taking people"s best friends out of their lives and memories for a few days is a pretty dick move." Kirk could get drunk on his own thanks, it was just less depressing with someone else there.

"I call and raise you again."
