If you take out all of the trips home, mostly from me but you also went home too so the kettle is calling the pot black in that instance, this is our two year anniversary of being Warden and Inmate, Shego.

We should celebrate. Or get horridly drunk so we forget that it's been twenty four months and you're still here. Or something.

"I've never complained about a drunk girl in my bed before." He was just trying to be funny and get her mind off the crap with Tim. It probably wasn't the best way to do that.

"Real classy, Kirk. And I'm not even drunk," which was still registering as a surprise. She slid back a little further, still resting on her hands, and her fingertips encountered something that bedsheets weren't meant to feel like. Not damp exactly, but kind of -

"Oh, ew!" She hauled herself up, snatching her hand away like it was burnt. "You gross - don't you change your sheets?"

Jim couldn't help but laugh at that, because he was just gross like that and it was kind of funny because it didn't happen to him. "I wasn't expecting you to Barge in here. Next time I'll clean up immediately."

She got up and wiped her - in all likelihood, completely clean - hand on his sleeve before moving to sit on his desk instead. "Yeah, you do that. I thought you'd given up on sleeping with nutjobs." 'Nutjobs' here acting as an acceptable synonym for 'anyone on the Barge'.

"I found someone sane," Jim answered, kind of staying exactly where he was on the bed. "It happens once in a blue moon."

"That's...the fact that it happened is already more than I ever need to know."

"Probably why I didn't offer you the information until you asked."

"I so did not ask! This information was forced on me by the fact you refuse to do laundry!" Maybe that wasn't entirely rational. She scowled at him and held out her glass.

He gave her the booze because he felt bad and because he promised her some. "You're the one who sprawled all over my bed."

"I sat. There was no sprawling. Anyway, you were saying like two minutes ago how much you liked that."

"I can change the sheets if you want to come back."

"Hey, don't go to any trouble on my account."

She glared into her glass for a while.

"I told him we should go on a 'break'. I'm pretty sure that's chick talk for delaying the inevitable."

Jim winced in sympathy for Tim. He'd never been put on a break before but he imagined that he would hate it. "You're just keeping his hopes up with that."

"Yeah, I know. But if I'd just dumped him straight out then he'd never speak to me again."

"I think dragging it out will just hurt him more in the end."

That didn't sound like an entirely horrible outcome. She swallowed the thought.

"He'll get over it."

Jim raised an eyebrow at her for that. "Kids are resilient."

"You could probably make me sound slightly more like a child molester if you put your mind to it, Kirk."

"I'll keep it on the back burner for a really boring day."

"Gee, thanks." She frowned at the ceiling. "Thanks for not trying to give me the 'just because this relationship went bad doesn't mean they all will' talk, by the way." She remembered a variation on it post-Rayne. "Appreciate it."

"I like Tim. He isn't insane like Rayne. So I'm not really worried that he's ruined your world view of people."

That was...kind of the problem. The fact that Tim wasn't crazy - or at least crazy within parameters appropriate to his life history - made this whole thing much harder to deal with. What was under threat this time wasn't her view of people but (more damagingly) her view of her own ability to function in a relationship. Two for two was kind of a terrible record. (Two and a half if you counted whatever had almost-happened with Mozenrath. She didn't.)

At least this time she'd held onto Tim a little longer before finding a reason to push him away.

"Don't worry, that was already in shreds way before we starting dating."

"And Tim did nothing to salvage that?"

He had. A little. Which was also kind of the problem.

"What, did you think his nerdy charm and winning smile were gonna restore my long-lost faith in humanity? Spare me."

Jim really didn't want to pick this issue to death. So he just decided to throw in the towel. "You're pretty."
