[Kirk's been on the Infirmary job for about a day and he still doesn't find it that difficult. Yeah, there's a lot of paperworky type stuff but it's nothing compared to the level that he found himself buried under as Captain of the Enterprise.

So he's kinda bored.

That means it's time to visit with the sickies.

Kirk tosses the PADD he was fiddling with onto the desk in Bones's unofficial office and enters the Infirmary proper. With a single glance around, he decides that T'Pol is the best choice and moves to her bedside.]

"Hey T'Pol. Feeling any better?"

"Yeah, it's a piece of frozen shit." [Jim looks like he really hates that planet, which he does. If only for the giant monsters that tried to kill him.]

"Spock marooned me there."

"Mutiny. It's a hobby of mine apparently."

"I beamed back onto the Enterprise, mid warp and I emotionally compromised him right out of command."

You were his First Officer? [She'll need this story in full eventually, but now it's just making her head hurt more.]

"Sort of. Pike was the captain, but then he got captured but before he did that, he promoted Spock and then promoted me. I think he expected something bad like that to happen."

...I see. [Just gonna. Close her eyes against that headache for a breath.] An interesting way to achieve your rank. Spock stayed on board? [She's kind of impressed, given the emotional outburst and what happened to Vulcan.]

"Yeah, I don't think a lot of people are happy with giving the flagship to a cadet right out of the Academy." [It just makes him more determined to prove them wrong.]

"He almost didn't. But he changed his mind at the last second. I'm not really sure why."

[She didn't know that bit about him, and her eyebrows jump for a moment.] I imagine you are quite proud.

"Yeah, it's a huge honor." [He just wishes more than anything that his dad could've seen it.]

"The future's a pretty interesting place."

"No. I've been lucky enough to avoid that."

I see. [T'Pol's just in with a bad crowd.] Where death would seem to have no meaning, I wondered how the Admiral deterred a higher death rate than there already seems to be. I believe I understand now.

It is unpleasant. Strangely, I have endured worse, and this cannot last. [Right. It isn't gonna last, right? Because by worse, she means barely. This sucks.]
