It seems as though more and more of my crew are joining me here. It warms my heart, it really does.

Bones, Chekov, let's give Uhura a tour of the pub. Tomorrow night better work for everyone.

And I'll make that an order if you start whining, Lieutenant, so save your breath.

Shego, you can come too and I don't know, sip ginger ale. You too, T'Pol. For old time's sake.

I'm just saying that if you don't have time to have a drink with friends, then you don't have time to have a conversation with me.

You've already made it clear that you have a responsibility to Pavi first, and I get that, I really do.

I can't leave the Sick Bay, bring me an apple or something will you?

You really want to talk in front of Pavi and your medical staff?

There's an office. It's your choice.

[No reply cause he's walking to the kitchen right now.]

[Yeah, he's not coming. McCoy rolls his eyes at his PADD, leaning against one of the beds. He's not sure if Jim not coming is a relief or disappoint.

Well he was hungry.]

"Hey, Bones, look sharp."

[And with that, Kirk pretty much throws the apple at the doctor's head. Because he doesn't do subtly when he's nervous.

He takes another bite out of his own apple as he moves deeper into the Infirmary.]

[By some act of god he didn't get nailed in the forehead, fumbling with the apple before glowering at Jim.] Are you insane man? [There was definite muttering about what his profession was and wasn't, the wasn't being a catcher obviously. He gestures at the curtained beds, making a 'sh' gesture before heading to the office before they woke anyone up.]

"You tell me I'm insane every day, Bones."

[Jim followed Bones into the office, still munching on his apple like it was a metaphorical safety blanket.]

"What's up, Bones?"

And it's never any less true.

[He closes the door behind them. The office is smaller than his at the Enterprise and it isn't his so much as a general area for the staff but it does the job. He delays, sitting at the desk chair and examining the apple.]

You know I've been asked more than once how the hell we became friends. I always figured we were both so damned fucked up that it was inevitable.

[Jim goes pretty still, if that is at all possible. In the sense that talking about their friendship just sounds like it's going wrong somewhere and he really doesn't want that to happen.]

"Maybe I'm just wooed by people threatening to puke on me."

[McCoy snorts.] You're wooed by anything with two legs half the time.

[He frowns, putting the apple down and sighing.] Damnit look, I thought I got you, and god knows I do most of the time but you always manage to surprise me. That meld, it certainly proved that. [He says it in a rush because damn it he's not good at this, it's one of the reasons he and Jocelyn ended up where they did. Talking about Jim is fine, but talking about Jim and himself- that was different.] You- shit Jim, I knew you were determined to get me as CMO but I always figured it was some sort of repayment for getting you on the Enterprise and flat out bull headedness.

"Well yeah, that was part of it. I wasn't gonna let them screw everyone else who deserved to be up there."

[If Bones thought he was bad at this type of conversation, then he's never tried to have it with James Kirk. Who fidgets, stares at the ground a lot and avoids the real issue at hand.]

"I'm really not being sarcastic when I say that you're the best."

That's not what I mean and you know it. [McCoy gave him a frustrated glance, weren't they a damn pair. In his sappier moments he'd admit he really wouldn't have it any other way but for now he just huffed.] I was you Jim. [He repeated, struggling to explain it.] I know.

[Kirk bit down on the inside of his cheek and stared at the ground again.]

"What do you want me to say about it then?"

[Bones stares at him before looking past some point over his shoulder. That was the question. After a moment he stands. It was beginning to feel too damned professional, like scolding an ensign about their sexual choices.]

I don't know Jim. [He says, a bit frustrated as he crosses his arms, running a hand over his mouth before continuing.] Why? I mean you're a god damned genius, a good leader, a good friend when you actually let people get that far. You don't- You're too hard on yourself, you know that?

[Kirk gives him a look for that because it's really not what he came down here to talk about. Though he isn't really sure what he wants to come out of this conversation, if he was being completely honest.]

"Did you really drag me down here so you can lecture me on my flaws again?"
