[He rolls his eyes.]

[Kirk holds his breath for a moment, hesitating, he doesn't really even know Mal but maybe that's good. She doesn't have any expectations of him. He can be a mess in front of her, she's not on his crew, she didn't know him before he came here.]

[When he should be there, maybe he can stop it, maybe he can just kill the fucker who did it, both are appealing.]

[She is fairly judgmental of him, but doesn't allow it to show. He's a commanding officer; he ought to be more put together than this. On the other hand, everyone needs some time to . . . well. Get drunk and lose it.]

[She waves for another drink, for both of them.]

What would you do, if you were there?

[There's a reason why Sulu and Spock are nowhere to be found right now. But he's still so new at this, so young to be the captain of a flagship, that he doesn't really have it mastered.]

[Would you kill him, is what she wants to know, she wants to know explicitly, so that she can judge. Because she would probably kill him.]

[She doesn't like relying on other people's justice much.]

[He wants to kill him. He wants to kill Khan like he killed Nero. Nero took his father and six billion Vulcans, he deserved to die. One life, as far as Kirk knows, doesn't equate that but it's Pike.]

Maybe I shouldn't answer that, given where we're at. Wouldn't want to end up on the other side.

[The flicker of a smile. She takes a drink before she answers.]

[Kirk smiles thinly and finishes off the last of his drink.]
