[Kirk is likely, barely holding it together. Pike is dead, and he wants nothing more than to leave and hunt down the person who did it and he's slowly running out of the ability to talk himself out of doing just that.
But first, he wants to talk to Sulu, because he's suddenly sure this is what the pilot was keeping from him.]
[ sulu feels bad. he feels bad because the first thing he feels is relief before the sadness, and when he closes his eyes for a brief moment, it's a thank fuck and it could have gone the other direction and i'm glad it didn't.
[Kirk's too wrapped up in his own head to notice any relief from Sulu. He nods after a moment, not sure if Sulu is apologizing for keeping this from him or for the loss of Pike, and maybe it doesn't matter. He accepts the apology for both.]
You don't happen to have an extra sword here do you?
[Because learning to fence is a distraction he might sorely need.]
[Kirk goes stiff for a moment. He needs to find Khan, he needs to kill him, he needs to get justice for Pike's death, he needs Pike to not be dead, he needs to know what he's supposed to do now.
Somehow, he doesn't think that Sulu has the answers to that.
He nods once.] Thank you. [He nods again before heading for the stairs.]
[ he can almost read it on jim's face, the things going on in his head, and he wants to help, wants to tell him that it's going to be fine - but it wasn't then, it isn't now.
sulu knows that he doesn't have the answers that he's going to want to hear. it's why he's here in the first place.
so after only a couple of seconds, he steels himself and follows his captain to the gym. ]
[When they get to the gym, it takes Kirk a minute to locate where the practice swords were kept. He didn't say much the entire way there, what's there even to say. Nothing, that's what. They're on the same page now, as far as he's concerned, Pike's dead. He doesn't want to talk about it. He wants to drink or hit something and he's not quite to the point of getting hammered in front of his helmsman.]
[ sulu follows. that's practically the only thing he can do at this point, and when kirk address him he immediately goes and fixes his stance and briefs him about the rules. informal as it is, it's still fencing and not swishing-your-sword-back-and-forth. ]
Here's fine. [ he grabs his own sword. ] Ready?
[ he positions himself in front of kirk, sword up. you first, captain. ]
[To be fair, Kirk definitely will still approach is as swishing his sword wherever he feels like it, because that's how he fights with his hands. He tries to pay attention though, and nods when Sulu asks. He's as ready as he's going to be, so he takes the first swing.]

[ he's on there, top speed, like the good lieutenant that he is. how kirk sounds isn't biding well for him. ]

They have practice swords at the gym.
[ it's a good distraction, fencing, because he can close his mind and focus on the situation he's in rather than think about - other things. ]

Don't you improvise in fencing?
[He blocks Sulu's swing easily enough, at least he's got that going for him.]

[ which almost happened. ]
Other wise there are rules.
