.004 - video

I don't think these things are malfunctioning at all but if it's just an excuse to roll call, then I'm Captain James T. Kirk. My friends call me Jim.

[He tips the communicator to the side, and there's Spock. Looking stoic as always.]

And that's Spock. Don't worry kids, he always looks like that. He won't bite.

And while that remains a possibility, and not a fact, I hope you will appreciate which one of us is in a more temporally stable position to answer questions.

[Though she doesn't particularly want to mimic his question. Why Vulcan? Even at the worst of the Dominion war, they were firmly members of the Federation. Perhaps she's inadvertently opened communication with the mirror universe. It wouldn't be the first time.]

So, you tell me. What is the status of Vulcan?

[He inclines his head. She is right.]

Vulcan has been destroyed.

[Mild. Perfectly detached.]

[That's -- no. Not the universe where the Terran Empire ruled, then. From what she understood, even in the hell that the Klingons put the planet through, Vulcan stood strong. Its people refused to abandon the dried out, ruined surface.

This is something else. Another thread of time, rooted in the worst thing that Jadzia has ever heard.

She is unable to disguise her shock. Who would be?]

I'm so sorry.

[He lets a silence lapse before he speaks.]

Am I correct to assume that this is not the case for your timeline's past?

No. No, quite the opposite.

[She spoke at a conference on Vulcan not two months ago. It seems a unnecessary fact to vocalize.]

Was it the Borg?

[omg why is everyone spoiling him for the future.]

It was a Romulan.

[He doesn't add 'Please do not tell me who the Borg are' because really.]

[Yeah, that was rookie level mistake. She is still processing the whole Vulcan is destroyed thing. And congrats, because that is another ridiculous piece of information to process, and you've managed to become more logically incongruous than the last three wormhole anomalies combined.

Should have just given her name and date.]

The--

[Since when did the Romulans possess that kind of power? The Borg went around destroying and assimilating planets. The Romulans were...politically cranky. And even when they'd been far, far worse than that, they wouldn't have risked destroying a Federation planet so openly.]

Surely the Federation didn't stand for that.

The Captain did not stand for it.

[It's a mild correction, but an important one. Kirk's decision had saved Earth and millions of other lives in the 'Fleet, even if he'd broken the rules.]

[Speaking of which--]

Are there laws governing exchanging information across these temporal disturbances?

[Of course he didn't. Jadzia smiles -- there's a reason that Kirk is the standard by which Starfleet captains invariably measure themselves.]

That is an excellent question, to which I have no answer. There are very clear laws regarding interfering in one's own timeline. I've witnessed first hand the consequences of breaking them. But if what you say is true, my reality as it stands shouldn't even exist.

[She ducks her head down, scanning the day's logs. But as far as she can tell, all Federation outposts are standing. Including those on Vulcan.]

A parallel universe?

[Y E P he's met older Spock.]

One created when the Romulan in question altered the timeline, yes.

[Beat.]

May I ask what happened when one's own timeline is interfered with by a past or future version of oneself?

My crew and I were transported to a milestone era in early twenty-first century Earth history. My captain, through no fault of his own [temporal regulation officers have ears EVERYWHERE, you never know], interfered in a landmark civil rights movement.

As a result, entire planets were wiped out. We were forced to directly interfere in historical events, in order to set things right. I can't imagine that the consequences of losing Vulcan would be any less dire.

[His brow furrows with what could almost be worry.]

The long-term effects upon my timeline are not yet apparent. It has only been a few weeks.
