I don't think these things are malfunctioning at all but if it's just an excuse to roll call, then I'm Captain James T. Kirk. My friends call me Jim.

[He tips the communicator to the side, and there's Spock. Looking stoic as always.]

And that's Spock. Don't worry kids, he always looks like that. He won't bite.

There are temporal disruptions currently occurring. [Is this why Nyota was worried?] What is happening, Lieutenant?

( Sulu straightens, his face slightly distorted into an uncomfortable expression. almost- pained. )

Sir, Khan Noonien Singh is a Human Augment from the late 20th century. He was roused from cryogenic sleep by Admiral Marcus for the purpose of using him against the Klingons but he rebelled. The Admiral called for a summit at the Headquarters to figure out what to do with him but he attacked.

He - ( oh no, he can't do this. ) - sir, he killed Admiral Pike, as well as several other members of the 'fleet. Captain Kirk w - has been tasked to hunt him down.

[Spock freezes, and tries to control himself, because that is too emotional a reaction.]

You will not convey this information to the Captain.

No, sir.

( sulu knows when he's in trouble. who the hell is he supposed to listen to between the two of them? also he hopes the questions stop now. this is even worse than he and kirk space-dived to the Narada's drilling platform. )

Is there anything else I should be aware of?

[Divergent timelines. Strictly speaking he shouldn't be asking this question but Admiral Pike is dead and-- to hell with logic.]

( what logic spock has decided to throw out, sulu applies to himself. the temporal distortion that spock is talking about already poses a problem, and they've had some ideas on what that does to the timeline. he shouldn't have said anything in the first place, but that's nothing compared to what he doesn't want to say.

no, he thinks. he was acting captain for all of five minutes or so but he knows what he has to do - he'll take the fall, if anything. )

We've apprehended Khan. I believe he will be returned to sleep when we return to headquarters.

[Spock nods, curt.]

Thank you, Lieutenant.

[He is uneasy, but he has no reason to suspect Sulu is keeping anything from him. The stress of such a mission can often be... unbearable.]

( he nods back. )

Commander. ( he pauses. ) Will have any adverse effect on our current timeline?

I do not believe so.

[You don't serve with Kirk and learn not to put... faith in certain things.]

Of course, sir.

( sulu nods again, but expression doesn't really change. he might have wanted - at the very least, he wanted to know if it would save the captain from - well. )

A word of caution, commander: Khan was given the name 'Commander John Harrison' by Admiral Marcus in order to hide his identity. If he - there's a chance that might use it, if he finds his way there.

[Spock's expression is perfectly neutral, but inside, he is steeling himself. He intends to return home as soon as possible to make sure nothing is amiss.]

What are you whispering about over there?

[It's weird, Spock. It feels like secrets.]

[Without missing a beat-] I am attempting to gauge the status of the ship.

And is there a particular reason why you are trying to hide that from me?

I incorrectly assumed you would be interested in the technical details.

[And he simply deletes the conversation. No need for Kirk to know any of this until Spock has sorted it all out.]

[Kirk rolls his eyes a little.]

So? How is she?

A few minor repairs. It appears you were... enthusiastic in a recent altercation, but we were ultimately victorious.

[This tone is completely deadpan.]

Enthusiastic, how? Everyone else is telling me I'm knocked out.

It is your enthusiasm that leads to those situations, is it not?

[That might be a tiny bit teasing.]

[Kirk laughs.]

Yeah, that's true.

Our mission will be a success, it seems.

[He puts his hands behind his back and walks over to the communicator to see who else will be responding. That stoic veneer isn't going to break. Not right now.]

[Kirk grins, totally unaware of the news that Spock received from Sulu. That his death is less than a year away.]

Of course it is. It's us.
