[Kirk disliked hospitals and sickbays and infirmaries and anywhere where medical procedures were done, even when he had to be there because he was dying or close to dying or just needed stitches. When it was pretty much dead in there, and he was more or less forced to be around just in case, and maybe there wasn't much medical help he could do but there was a lot of stocking and counting that his genius level intellect could handle.

For about a half hour and then he got really bored of it. And there was just something about Merlin that said bother me all you want.]

"Merlin, do you know what chess is?"

Merlin was quietly adding some newly made potions to the inventory and paused when Kirk spoke. He'd been peripherally aware of his presence for a while - he seemed like a man made entirely of fidgeting, and it was distracting.

"I've heard of it," he offered.

"I can teach you how to play it?"

"I'm a bit busy right this second," he said, although he didn't actually think learning to play chess right that second was what was being offered.

"I'm pretty sure it'll be fine if you don't do it for an hour."

Apparently it was.

"I'd rather do get it done while there's nothing else going on. Can't guarantee that'll be true in an hour. Didn't Dr. McCoy give you anything to do?"

"I literally will not count anything for a week. I refuse. It's a waste of my intelligence."

Merlin ruminated on that for a moment.

"Why did you agree to work here if you don't actually want to...work...here?"

"Bones said he needed extra hands. And I am technically trained in first aid."

I slept and woke up and I have work soon :c

"A few other Wardens take on-call shifts in case something happens," he offered. "You could do that instead, it shouldn't take you more than a few minutes to get here from anywhere else on the Barge."

Also it would get Kirk out from under his feet while he was trying to navigate a computer system he didn't understand very well, but he was too polite to say that.

Jim shrugged a little bit. "I think Bones likes to make sure I'm not doing anything crazy or illegal or immoral." And he liked bugging you so what of it, Merlin.

Merlin gave him a little sideways look. "There's only so much you can get up to. What does he think you'd be doing if you weren't here?"

"I like that you think innocently, Merlin."

"I'm not. It's just not as if you'll be out killing people or starting fires if you don't have something to take your mind off it." He shrugged. "Your first suggestion for something to do was a board game. I don't think he should be worried."

"That sounds...unhygienic," Merlin offered. "And what if there was an emergency?"

"How long does it really take you to redress?"

"You couldn't make me strip," Merlin said cheerfully. "Is there something we can play while I'm working?"

"Twenty questions," Merlin said in a cautious I-don't-know-what-that-is tone.

"It's pretty self explanatory."

not really. It's just hard work.

"So you think about something and I have to figure it out in twenty questions, and if I don't, you win and if I do, I win."

"...all right." He paused for barely a moment. "I've thought of something."

[captain_jtkirk]

"Is it or has it ever been alive?"

[takeyouapart]

"Yes." He made a note on a bottle label and put it away in the little cupboard he'd commandeered for storing potions.

"Is it a plant?"

[takeyouapart]

"No. Do you want a clue?"

[captain_jtkirk]

"No, that would ruin the game. Is it a person?"

[takeyouapart]

"No. I don't think you're going to get it in...seventeen questions."

Kirk really didn't care if he got it. Any conversation was better than sitting there in silence and counting while Merlin did whatever he did with those potions.

"Mammal, yes or no?"

"What's a - oh, no, I know." He still hesitated a moment longer before shaking his head. "No."
