She tucked her hands in her coat pockets and tagged along after him. "Halloween's coming up, right? 'Tis the season or whatever. I guess the Admiral thought we had an easy ride last year."

"I'm so thrilled for the nightmares and to bleed to death in the gym again then," Jim answered in a way that completely said he didn't care. Which, right now he didn't. It was the Barge. He had better things to brood about then dying here. Like dying back home, that was some serious shit.

"Uh huh." If she'd known what he was thinking, she would have told him to stop being such a little bitch. Pretty much the entire Inmate population had managed to suck it up.

"Might be nothing. Give a week. Admiral might be all 'hahah psych' and distribute baked goods, that'd be like him."

"I think he leans more towards the death and doom side of things still."

She frowned. "I know."

She hadn't exactly been expecting the CES to be a grey radioactive wasteland but it was still kind of a relief when it wasn't.

Kirk probably would've run through a radioactive wasteland anyway. "Still sure about your newly found sobriety?"

"Yeah, I am. I did manage my entire life pre-Barge without drinking, remember? It isn't that big a deal for me."

"How long does it take before functional alcoholism kills you, again?"

"Oh hey, maybe we worked out what McCoy's here to save you from."

"That hypocritical ass, I never wanted to see the other side of thirty anyway."

She just kind of looked at him. "Seriously, Kirk?"

Jim shrugged a little. "Well. Maybe I never expected to see it."

"Well, that's....still not great, but less suicidal, I guess? Even I saw myself making it to retirement." She paused. "Not that I planned on being older than forty when that happened."

"I'm a reckless idiot sometimes?" He offered by way of explanation because let's be real, that was all that it would take to kill him someday. "And you also fought a teenager who doesn't believe in killing."

"My world still had cops, Kirk. It wasn't all Possible all the time. Oh, and you'll notice little Kimmy seemed perfectly OK with killing about five seconds before I showed up here."

"Pretty sure you survive that crap when you graduate."

"How is that relevant to this conversation? I don't think she knew that at the time."

"Right. My point was that Starfleet probably has a higher mortality rate than being a sidekick."

She visibly bristled. "I was so not - oh, whatever. My point is that I'm surprised you couldn't gather up a little more optimism, Mr. Do It In Three."

"No one's dared me to stay alive that long like they have to join Starfleet."

"Is that literally the only motivational tactic that works on you?"

"Can I just complain for the sake of complaining right now without you nitpicking it to death?"

"It's kinda lame but I guess I can't stop you."

There was a rock in their path and she flipped over it rather than go around in a mild instance of showing off, not breaking her pace.

Well, Jim's usual habit of dealing with something was either to run from it and complain about something else or punch something, so maybe be thankful he hadn't punched you yet. He stopped running in response to the rock, passing his hand through his hair.

"You should push me off the cliff again. That would be a mercy."

She slowed at the realization that he'd stopped and looked over her shoulder at him.

"When exactly did I push you off a cliff the first time?"
