I'm sorry.

[Kirk didn't know for a day or two that Shego was in the Infirmary recovering from the death toll as well. And of course, he felt guilty for that. He felt guilty for a lot of things that had happened over the past few weeks, really. It still took him a few hours to summon the will to get up and go visit her.]

"Hi."

[And with that simple greeting, Kirk sat down on the edge of her bed and nudged at her to move over so he could lie down too.]

"Hitting him with a crutch might actually be more satisfying," Jim commented dryly. But he clearly didn't have a problem with hitting a cripple if they deserved it. "What's Harper doing with him, do you know?"

She shrugged, with difficulty, since shrugging is kind of a motion which demands the shrugger be vertical. "All I know is what everybody knows: he's in Zero with no filters. And all his mad science got confiscated, Harper posted publicly about that."

Kirk hadn't really gone over the journals since he woke up in the Infirmary, so he didn't know about that actually. "And what about yourself?" he asked quietly. "You doing okay? I mean, besides all of the death toll stuff."

"Yeah, I'm okay."

She wished she was angrier with Rex than she was. Maybe it was just the death toll washing her out, maybe it was the fact that she kind of sympathised with the position he'd been in, but she seemed to have skipped over the murderous rage and hit the inevitable getting-on-with-life that had characterised the fallout every time Drakken had screwed her over. Did that mean that she'd stopped caring about her own life? That she'd stopped caring about anything?

Maybe she was overthinking it.

"You?"

If she was overthinking it, then so was Kirk. And he was worrying on top of it because that was just what he always did.

"Just developing a hatred for the entire month of March."

What had been going on this time last year? Oh, yeah, Kirk had chugged a mug of something he shouldn't have done and it had made him crazy.

"Good call. Maybe you should fit that into your whole destiny shtick. The universe wants you to captain the Enterprise and hate springtime."

"How reasonable of the universe." Jim shifted around a little, turning more on his side. "I always thought something pastel couldn't be trusted anyway."

"Uh huh."

She was silent for a few moments, shifting a little on the bed. It hadn't really been built for two people.

"So, I met Batman. He's kind of a total jerk."

Too bad Kirk really wasn't planning on leaving in the near future. "Yeah? Does that surprise you about anyone here?"

"Not really. Trust me, I wouldn't have bothered if I hadn't known from Tim that he would've tracked me down anyway. Apparently there was the possibility of him taking issue with me dating his kid - adopted kid - whatever."

"I'm sorry, what?" Even though it made him dizzy to do it, Kirk sat up slightly and turned towards her. "Tim is the adopted son of Batman?"

Her expression just sort of froze in place for a moment.

"You....didn't know that."

"I'm thinking maybe it's not something that Tim advertises," Kirk quipped, arching an eyebrow at her. "Maybe start at the beginning."

"Can I at least get a guarantee of confidentiality? And by that I also mean that you won't tell him that I told you."

"I won't tell him that you told me," Kirk promised. But that didn't mean he wasn't going to say anything about being the children of Batman to either Dick or Tim in the future. "And I won't tell anybody that I'm not 100% sure already knows."

She frowned, because you could drive a truck through those loopholes and as much as he had never actually told her not to tell anyone he was Bruce's son, it felt like the makings of a stupid fight she really didn't want to have.

"Oh, like he's not going to know instantly that it must have been - "

Wait. This was already public knowledge.

"Hold that thought."

She reached out to the bedside table for her communicator and spent a few minutes digging, then presented Kirk with one of Tim's old updates (http://peektuttut.livejournal.com/22439.html).

"It was, like, another flood like the one when I turned into Possible? That happened while you weren't here. Tell him you were looking in the archives for something and found it. He says straight out that Wayne's his dad." And we're just never ever going to address who she turned into that time.

Kirk scanned the entry she just handed him, reading every possible word because he was a little bit of a control freak like that before he put it aside. "There's a difference between someone named Bruce Wayne and Batman. Tim doesn't put on some silly costume and fight crime does he?"

"No." She was just going to lie, because 'none of your business' sounded too much like 'yes' and it wasn't any of his business. Besides, it was a technical truth insofar as Tim hadn't donned the costume for crimefighting purposes for months, at not least while on the Barge.

"And Bruce Wayne is Batman, didn't you get the memo? Some of the movies have been passed around. Nobody is going to question you knowing that."

"We have other super heroes in the future, sorry to say. Batman isn't as popular," Jim rolled his eyes at her. "So how come Bruce has a problem with you?"

"That does not have any bearing on my point at all," she said, ignoring the question. "Do not call him on this unless you can at least imagine some other way you might've found out about it." A pause, then much more quietly: "Please."

When she practically whispered that, he reached out and squeezed her arm. "I'm not going to do anything. I just want to know why he has a problem with you. It's my right as friend and Warden."

"I'm asking you to tread lightly with Tim, not Wayne. Say whatever the heck you like to him." She cleared her throat. "And I don't think he actually has a problem with me, he's just a total failure at human communication. I mean, he made some noise about the age difference, but he backed off. As far as I can work out I've earned his approval by making sure he knows I don't freaking need, want or care about it."

Kirk was going to say something to both Tim and Dick about this because that was just the kind of person he was but he did plan on leaving Shego out of it. Just a friendly, so you were adopted by a billionaire and never said anything kind of conversation.

"What a strange man. Though I guess you'd have to be to dress up like a bat on a nightly basis."

"Yeah, no kidding. But whatever. As long as he never attempts to have a serious conversation with me ever again, I really don't care about him."

"I wonder why he adopted Tim. And Dick too I'm assuming," Kirk mused, frowning for a moment. "Kinda weird to collect kids too."
