[Kirk clipped Aristotle's leash on and went next door to fetch Shego, knocking lightly.] "It's me."

"Yeah, I'm coming." She appeared at the door a few seconds later, buttoning a dark blue jacket over her civilian clothes. "Hey."

"Hey." [He nodded somewhat towards the hallway like, let's get moving. And use a little of syllables as possible apparently.]

Shego fell into step next to him, not failing to notice that Aristotle kept looking around in what she could only assume was bewilderment over the unusual quiet going on behind him. Well. She wasn't going to say anything because she didn't know what counted as safe conversation just then.

Kirk probably didn't even notice that Aristotle was picking up on his mood. He walked for about a minute before he sighed and said, "So you're green again." At least he was speaking. You had to give him that.

"I'm also fifteen years younger and childless. And you're a bachelor again, so, hey. We both win."

"I was talking to Stephanie how it's clearly a sign that I'm meant to settle down with Morgan and start adopting people from the Barge."

"Yeah, because you'd make an awesome parent, right?"

"I'd clearly be the cool parent. You want ice cream for dinner? Sure. Who cares?"

"And then Child Services come along and take a bunch of fat toothless kids away to go live with somebody responsible. Or maybe that was your plan all along."

"Seeing as kids were never really in the plan to begin with, that could work out. Or Morgan would lay down the law or something."

"Morgan? Sure. Between the pirate and the space captain with a mental age of around fourteen, you'd do great." They emerged on deck and she blinked up at the darkness above them. "But, whatever. I guess suburbs are kind of foreign to you anyways."

"I grew up on a farm, so. Close neighbors are kind of a foreign thing." Iowa probably didn't even have suburbs because that's how much it sucked. Kirk bent over slightly to unhook the dog's leash because there wasn't a whole lot he could get into on the deck.

Aristotle gave them both a look and then wandered off to explore. Shego folded her arms.

"You weren't missing anything."

Kirk glanced at her, smirking just a little bit. "Yeah, think of all those cows I wouldn't have been able to tip."

"Hey, I'd have been happy to tip cows if it meant being able to avoid my neighbors. Or being able to do anything without it being public knowledge five minutes afterward."

"Then maybe I did live in the suburbs since that was exactly like Iowa. Bunch of old gossipy hags."

"Mm." This was one of the few times she'd been through something that had cut close enough to her old life - her old old life, before she'd switched sides, before she'd even had her powers - that she actually felt like talking about it, but Kirk seemed so disinterested in hearing it that she wasn't going to push the issue. She leaned against the railing and stared out into space, frowning faintly.

He was just distracted, obviously, that he kept missing conversation cues. But it finally got through to him maybe a minute later that Shego was quiet and she wasn't ever really quiet without a reason. But fuck if he knew what the reason was. "What's up?"

She frowned and shrugged. "I like mountain lairs better than creepily insular suburbs is all."

Kirk snorted softly, not entirely surprised. "Because of the solitude or what it stands for?"

"Because I hated where I lived as a kid, and almost everyone I lived with, and it got worse after I got my powers and I like being somewhere as not like it as possible."
