"Pass Harper tools and be an extra pair of hands sometimes," she said blandly. "I don't know about like, but he's tolerable and I don't have to deal with anybody else, which makes it easily my favourite job here so far."
"So long as you like it, I don't have a problem with it." He made a mental note to talk to Harper though, to get updates on her and how she was doing down there every once in a while.
"Learning anything? From what I rememeber, this thing has an amazing set up."
She gave a lazy shrug and sipped her coffee. What she'd actually been doing was every so often ask 'what does that do?' type questions, ostensibly out of boredom, only to make very precise mental notes of the answers and write them down later on in the hope that maybe someday they might be useful. Couldn't hurt.
"God no. I am more than prepared to leave the nerd stuff to the nerds."
Jim snorted softly. "Anything else you think I should know? And by that I mean my standard is as low as, you stubbed your toe last month and chipped the nail polish."
She folded her arms and leaned forward. "Okay. Rule number two, don't talk about me to anybody I socialize with unless it's a matter of life or death."
"Deal," Jim nodded slightly. "Rule number three, be honest with me. You have a right to your privacy and I'll respect that, but if it's something I need to know about, especially anything important, or even if it's just a really bad day and you want to rant til you turn blue, then I want to hear about it."
Well. She didn't intend on keeping to that rule for a second, but since he'd worded it kind of vaguely she could be generous with the working definition of her right to privacy and what exactly he would 'need' to know about.
"Deal. Rule number four, I want one night a week of above-deck access. I don't care if you wanna make me earn it somehow, but there it is."
"Above deck is kind of broad. So is "one night". Do you want the whole night or just the evening? Where do you want to go? Do you want to bring anyone with you?"
"Actually, it is. This isn't a pleasure cruise and the above deck areas are a privilege for the Wardens. So yeah, you are going to have to earn it and given what you've told me today, you aren't going to earn it for a while. But I'll keep it in mind and if you do earn it, then you'll get it."
She knew she'd been pushing it with that one - and what had she done recently that was so terrible? - but never mind. She'd need Kirk to get into the pub as far as she knew, but otherwise....well, dating a Warden had its perks.
"I realize I need to state everything clearly with you and I'm betting that even now, you're thinking of ways to find a way around it," Kirk answered levelly. She reminded him a lot of himself most of the time and that was how he thought, so he was just going to assume the worst. Because then, he was never disappointed.
"But that's fine. I can out play this game to see who can out stubborn the other one first. Or we can be actual growns up and work together."
Her eyes narrowed. "Look, honestly? I realized these rules were going to be an exercise in pointlessness when you decided to open the conversation with 'don't kill anybody'. I mean, come on. When was that ever an issue with me? You come out with ridiculous non-statements like that and I wonder if you've even got your memory back."
"And therefore, it'll probably end up the only rule that doesn't get broken," Kirk retorted. "And I like some tiny measure of success in really tough problems."
Did she dislike anybody on the Barge enough to kill them, just to make a point? No, not really. Hm.
"'Really tough problems'. Uh huh. What exactly have I been doing lately that is encouraging you to be such a total pain in the ass? Oh, I remember - you don't know because you haven't been here."
"You just said that you're in exactly the same place as when I left. So I really didn't miss anything now did I? And you've been here for over a year now, so you're pretty clearly in it for the long haul."
"Way to not actually answer the question. You've said it yourself, I've got my heels dug in pretty hard here, so what's the point of you being a jerk?"

She leaned back when he asked the question, frowning minutely. "Some. I asked nicely. Oh, and I got a new job. Engine room."

"Am I allowed to talk to them at all? What if they bring you up first?"

"Whatever. So. Is that all?"

"Yeah, yeah. You do realize that's implied, right? I'm a grown-up, I can work out the finer details for myself."
