.003 - food for thought

If out of sight is out of mind, then how does absence make the heart grow fonder?

[Private to T'Pol]

I have an odd question for you.

[And she waits. And secretly checks to make sure nothing of Harper's is lying around mysteriously. Not that it would be but...she knows how much the Barge hates people.]

[Oh man, it would really make Kirk's day to find something of a strange man's in her room. Not really but he still hadn't given up on how weird it was that Uhura didn't ask about Spock. But she didn't really ask about anyone else so maybe he was reading too much into it.

Jim frowned to himself, bouncing on his heels a little as he knocked on Uhura's door.]

It's unlocked! [She was sitting at her desk, curled up in her chair as she looked over some sheet music she had found in the library earlier.]

[Kirk opened the door and stepped inside, looking at her like he was expecting her to hit him.]

"So this story?"

[She laughed.] Shut the door. [A pause as she gathered her thoughts. She was only going to tell bits of the story and embellish the heck out of it.]

Yes, the story. Has anyone explained to you what happens when you fall off the barge during a port?

"I'm pretty sure no one's really fully explained what a "port" is. But go on."

It's when the Barge stops somewhere and we all get off and have an adventure and then get back on after. Well, in this case, we didn't land so much as we did...crash. And people fell off. When that happens, you apparently replace some of the natives and lose all sense of yourself.

[She paused.]

This too complicated for you?

"Wait, can you go back to the part where the Barge stops?" [Kirk asked, laughter in his eyes as he found a place to sit.]

"So I'm guessing I did something stupid. Go on."

[She rolled her eyes and leaned back in her chair, turning to face him.] You didn't do anything stupid, amazingly. You were actually leading a revolution. I worked for you, helping you out. We put out posters and did sabotage and...[She laughed.] I can't remember why, but we didn't have shoes.

"Well, you know sometimes you have to sell your shoes for poster board," [Kirk answered her laugh with one of his own.] "I mean, being a revolutionary doesn't pay well last I checked. It's why I went with Starship captain."

No. We were tired and hungry and lived in dirt, but at least we were fighting for something. [She shrugged.] There was a fantastic poster you put out once, depicting the current leader in a very...negative light. It was rather hum- Oh I remember why we didn't have shoes! [She sat up straighter.]

We threw them at public officials.

[Kirk let out a bark of laughter at that.] "I do like this story. Anything else good happen?"

[Well, there was the part where they had sex, but she wasn't going to bring that up.]

Hmm...not really. Looking back on it now, it wasn't that terrible, but it was actually a horrible place to be.

I guess the fact that I can laugh about it now means that things are at least a bit better now.

Oh, and apparently I'm really good with a knife.

[Kirk arched an eyebrow at that.] "Alright, next knife fight we" [as in the crew of the Enterprise, not the people on the Barge] "get into over trade rights, you're up."

Next knife fight? [She couldn't help but laugh about it.]

There has already been one?

You're right, you're right. My mistake.

[She shifted in her chair. Not nervously but...awkwardly.]

That was the end of my story, though.
