.003 - food for thought

If out of sight is out of mind, then how does absence make the heart grow fonder?

[Private to T'Pol]

I have an odd question for you.

Because in the absence of a good memory is a hole that can never be filled, nor would you ever wish it to be. You may find other things, perhaps better things, but in that emptiness lies a unique shape that no amount of moulding can make fit, and none of them would ever be quite right.

Then I'll ask you how you think one should deal with that emptiness.

Look at it more like a window. Sometimes something is going to remind you, and for no reason you're going to remember it pleasantly. Focus on that pleasantness. In too many of my regenerations, I've been so burdened by guilt I couldn't even look back at the people I left behind, and this time around I want nothing more than to immerse myself in their presence.

Your... regenerations?

[Yeah, that's all he got out of that.]

There's more than one version of me aboard, my good Captain. My race regenerates when they die, and retains their memories.
