[Another long, long pause and then Kirk cuts off the transmission. EVERYTHING FROM HERE ON OUT IS TEXT. But uh, feel free to spam harass him because lol he's probably drinking :|]

Yes, of course. Renate, debout!

[And as she is a puppy and therefore not yet perfectly trained, she wiggles a little in place, doing little else beyond acknowledging that she's receiving attention. He shakes his head -- it's a new trick. He'll work on it later.]

A gift from this Christmas, and a constant companion since.

"She's a pretty good looking dog." [Kirk reaches out to pet her because he can't resist.] "I have Sam Winchester's dog to look after now."

[Renate lays her ears back and smells his hand before letting him pet her. She's wary of completely new people, and only seems overly excited about strangers if that stranger happens to be a dog. Once she has determined that he is not a threat, though, she returns to her usual happy self and lets him pet her.]

She's almost too active for me, but it's gotten me to exercise more.

[Since if he didn't at least jog with her she'd drag him everywhere. In the sitting area, the Marquis already has a fire going, two goblets and a decanter of wine waiting.]

"Oh good. I'd hate for you to have another heart attack." [Jim says it with a wink over his shoulder. Then he makes his way over to one of the chairs, claiming the one on the left for himself.]

"How's your Inmate been treating you since the port?"

[The Marquis takes a seat on the sofa, as his favorite chair has been taken -- Kirk always does this when he visits -- and takes up a goblet of wine.]

Honestly, I fear I may have tightened the leash a little too much. Or perhaps just enough. He has worked diligently, but I have had him working round the clock and it's begun to take its toll.

[Kirk does this kind of thing to everyone. Don't take it personally.]

"Yeah, I hear sleep is pretty nice sometimes." [He reaches for his own goblet and swirls it around absentmindedly.] "Maybe you should let him get some fresh air in the CES. Shego loves that."

I'm making arrangements to do just that, actually. [The Marquis takes a sip from his cup and watches him.] Does it make you feel better to talk about these things?

"As opposed to talking about how my CMO up and left?" [Kirk asks, rather bluntly before he lifts the glass to his mouth and takes a hard swallow.] "There's nothing to talk about. He's most likely back on Enterprise which is where I should be too."

[The Marquis counters with surprising calm.]

Your Inmate needs you here.

"That might be the only reason I'm still here right now."

It doesn't matter if it's the only reason, so long as it's strong enough to work. She appeared to react as well. Can you imagine what it might do to her if you were to follow suit?

[Kirk is well aware of how much Shego will probably retreat into herself if he left too, even if she claimed not to care.]

"I know. I just wish I could reform her on Enterprise."

[The Marquis watches him a minute. Not that he's one to hesitate before he puts an assumption to words, but for some reason he exercises delicacy tonight.]

...If I had taken Iago with me to follow after Paviche, I would very likely have lost him.

[Kirk arches an eyebrow at that. Just wondering what the hell the Marquis is assuming with that.]

"It's my ship. If he doesn't want to be around me, then he can ask for a transfer." [He says this with a lot of caution, like he's trying not to give away too much.]

"Do you resent Pavi for graduating?"

No. When the time comes and I tire of this existence I will go and join him. [He eyes him pointedly over his glass.] And I was talking about losing Iago, not Pavi.

[Ah. Well then.] "I think Shego will hate any place that she's at so long as she has to answer to someone else."

And anywhere else she'll die, and so will you, and nothing will undo it. Don't make excuses. You can't help her anywhere else but here, and the more you try to justify otherwise the more likely you are to forget that.

"Are you just saying that because you graduated here or because you genuinely think having your mind messed with every month is beneficial?"

I'm saying that because when I took up the contract -- when you took up the contract, that was what we were agreeing to. [A sip.] And don't whine about having your mind messed with. Your mind was 'messed with' in life; you're just complaining now because you have something to conveniently blame it all on. Things happen, and must be dealt with. You're here to make certain Shego deals with them the proper way.

[Honestly, Jim is scared that Shego's going to take McCoy leaving personally and he has no idea how to help her through that when he's thinking the same thing. But he doesn't want to admit to that.]

"I'm not leaving. I just hate not knowing what happened."
