.067 - this is how captains spend their holidays

Since it is a holiday and while I respect it, I don't celebrate or observe it. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in a game of chess. Or any other quiet type of recreation if you can think of something better.

Let's talk.

[ooc; this is the type of chess Kirk plays. But. He also lets people win because it's hard.]

[CUT TO: int. mess hall. I need to stop working on this script. Tim makes his way there pretty quickly. Ulterior motives and...being on the same floor lends speed.]

[Well, he's just going to have to wait a little bit until Kirk gets there, since he has to gather up his awesome three dimensional chess board and the pieces and make his way down all those floors.

It's a tough life he leads.]

"Hey Tim." [Kirk greets him with a nod as he sits down at the same table.]

[So hard. So hard. Tim nods back, eying the 3D set and smiling despite himself.] Hey. So you really have one of these.

"Yeah, I bought it right before we left. I figured it be one of the few things that Spock and I could agree on." [Jim explains, going about setting up the board. Then he pauses and gives Tim an odd look.] "Why? You know how to play it this way?"

I've seen it played. [He's not snorting to himself or anything. But he is helping set up a few pieces. not a bunch. The geeks only figured out part of the game. :|]

[Kirk's eyebrow goes up a little bit more at that.] "Where have you seen it played if you don't mind me asking?"

Couple places. [Don't make him admit to that Gotham comic con because THERE HAS TO HAVE BEEN ONE.]

"On the Barge?" [You're not from his time, you little stalker. Now fess up.]

No. Black or white? You're gonna have to walk my through some of the level movements. [Tim is very good at avoidance.]

"I'll take the black pieces." [Jim gives him a look for a few moments before he gets all of the pieces in place.] "It looks like regular chess from above. These two levels" [He pushes them around for your visual knowledge] "are the attack ones. You can move them to make a move but only if it's a legal move from the view above."

[He frowns at the board, then nods quickly.] Yeah, okay. Black still goes first, right?

[Jim shakes his head a little bit.] "It's white where I come from."

Oh. Yeah, you're right. [Dorky smile here.] Black goes first in checkers. [And he's moving up his knight first.]

[Kirk moves his pawn first. Because he's probably going to let you win.]

[Well that'll piss Tim off.]

Good thing those pranks only lasted a day. I don't think I could've gone on like that.

[You can't prove anything, Tim. Ever.]

"It's my understanding that April Fool's itself only lasts a day. It wouldn't make any sense to carry on after that."

[HE'S GONNA TRY REAL HARD.]

Could've if the prankster was a dick.

[Jim laughs softly at that, and moves his piece.] "Then you should be thankful that he, she, or it wasn't."

[Tim's setting a trap. Sort of. It's not the best, this isn't exactly normal chess.]

He probably can be. And whoever it is, he's ridiculously good with computers. From all different times, apparently.

"What makes you so certain it actually was a he?" [Kirk asks. You can have your trap, sir. He hopes it works out for you.]

[So does Tim. :| He just shrugs one shoulder, moving out a bishop.] Just a hunch. Not much of one. Thing is, I'm really good with computers. Especially my computer.

[Kirk moves his rook. His playing style probably doesn't make a lot of sense but he's also not trying very hard and is a sneaky fucker. So he could be making a trap.]

"Lots of people are really good with computers here."

[Sneaky fuck indeed. Tim takes his time, eying all those boards and Kirk's pieces.]

True. There's that Sato lady, I hear she's pretty good. And your engineer.

[He moves up a pawn.] Probably your whole crew. 21st century tech has to look like child's toys.

"Bones would complain that he's a doctor and not a engineer but yeah." [Kirk smiles softly and moves another pawn up a level.]

"What are you getting at?"

[Tim brings up his bishop and shrugs, aiming for Kirk's rook.]

Just that one of your people is the most likely to have done it. But it was harmless, right?
