.005 - Private to Prefect

I know we broke up but let's have a drink anyway.

I promise I won't hit you. Or insult Sam.

... well, I won't hit you.

[Prefect keeps his arm outstretched, the bottle in his hand still, waiting for Kirk to take it from him.]

I have a crate of Gin in my room. I don't really have anything else.

[He pauses for a moment, looking thoughtful.]

I have Tea? But I don't really drink much tea.

[Jim takes the bottle and holds it in one hand as he searches around for a couple of glasses. His quarters are a mess. He doesn't care what regulation states. He's not on the Enterprise, so who cares? Not that he would care much if he was on his ship.]

"You can sit if you'd like."

[He finds the glasses and offers one to Prefect.] "Just a suggestion but you could put the gin in the tea."

[Prefect takes a seat and accepts the glass, and drinks. Obviously right now his priority is not conversation. He puts away about half of the gin. Then lowers the glass.]

No. I like Gin as it is.

[He responds simply. Staring at Kirk.]

[Jim stares back at Prefect for a moment before throwing back half a glass of gin, hoping that it will make the staring less creepy. It doesn't.]

"Stop staring at me. It's fucking creepy."

[He frowns at Prefect for a moment before pouring himself more to drink. He takes a large drink of that as he waits for Prefect to comply, regretting that he promised not to hit his former inmate.]

[Prefect complies, shifting his stare a few inches to the left, so now he's staring just over Kirks shoulder. Then he takes a drink, then goes back to staring. For a long time he says nothing. Then eventually he asks.]

Uh, did you have some kind of objective in asking me to drink with you?

[He is vaguely aware that this is not him at his most sociable, but the promised pants are not forthcoming and he wants to go work...]

[Jim shrugs. He isn't going to admit that he's kind of lonely here and that on some level, he feel like he connects with Prefect. He also wants to do everything in his power to mess with Sam, but that probably won't go over well.]

"I thought you were banned from talking to me."

[He swirls the gin around in his glass, giving Prefect a challengingly look.]

"I like that you don't listen to him either."

[Prefect nods, smiling a little at that.]

Yeah, I'm pretty annoying. I think he's less bothered by it now that he's used to me, but I used to drive Sam completely insane.

[He's staring into space now, his voice is actually sort of impressed as he admits:]

He's put up with me for a long time without ever quitting.

[He's finding that he likes Prefect better now that he isn't in charge of him. When it's not his problem, when it's almost fun to encourage Prefect to not listen to authority, he doesn't care. He thinks it's because he's used to being the captain and people on his ship listen to him and when it comes down to it they do what he says, even if they don't like it.]

"Then I'll toast to Sam, for the man has more patience then I ever will which almost negates how much of a tool he is."

[Prefect doesn't reply this time. He just drinks along with Kirk, then grabs the bottle to top himself up. Then drinks some more, feeling the burn of the gin running down into him.]
